What did you lose...A fascinating reflection, Paul.

What did you lose? A creative vocation you were forbidden to pursue? Years of youth during which you were deprived of the freedom to be openly gay?

I was forbidden to major in art, forced into a more conventional field of study. Still, English literature was a field I enjoyed. The long Vietnam Idiocy forcibly diverted me from graduate study and helped channel me into a working life of poverty and mediocrity. Like you, I detest being manipulated, controlled, tamed.

Like you, I'm a man of northern European heritage (descended from English, Irish, German and French forebears) who, after a two-month exchange program in Mexico (with the Experiment in International Living), followed four years later by a Peace Corps tour of duty in Colombia, more or less unwittingly left his genes on the shelf and became a Latino. I've visited England, Norway, Finland, Ireland, Germany, Portugal and Italy, largely on business. I've spent, respectively, months and years in France and Spain. Now only three countries draw me in for exploration or living: France, Italy and Spain. The icy winters and the hot, humid summers of the American Midwest and New England repel me. I want strong Mediterranean light, olive oil, garlic, fish and shellfish and wine.Phil Freyderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16851016507912349399noreply@blogger.com
