Though 3 Dog Night sang it a lot (and I listened to them a lot) back in the day, I encountered the song in its original context as part of the tribal rock musical Hair. This is music from my seminary days when I was young and idealistic and emotional. It gets to me very deeply. I am no longer young and much more jaded now but still idealistic and emotional.
