It looks like an odometer, I know, BUT IT'S NOT. These are irreplaceable lives, every single one of them.

Troy Tom was Navajo.

We don't treat our indigenous peoples very well but we allow them to die for us all.

When I saw his name I suspected as much, though Tom does not sounds as Dine as Atcitty or Yazzie.

An extremely high percentage of First Nations citizens are veterans, living out the warrior tradition in a new setting, one that does not treat them well.
