Week two of conversational Russian

Not so much deer in the headlights as a look of anxious consternation. At least that's how I think the teach saw my expression tonight. Every time she or the class said something I did not understand, my brows furrowed (as they can do easily).

She tried to reassure me.

Well, I really do think I will be fine and I've learned a lot in just the last week, but I have difficulty hiding my feelings when I'm lost and confused.

It is also, no doubt, good for my soul NOT to know the answer to every question in a language class for a change.

Oof! She gives a lot of homework.

Homework

Interior of the Church on Spilled Blood
St Petersburg, Russia, November 2004

I just finished typing up my notes from last week's Russian class. My head is swimming a bit. It involves switching my keyboard back and forth between US English layout and a phonetic Russian layout and remembering which key is which.

Why are you taking this class?
Почему вы выбрали етот класс?

I want to continue [learning] the Russian language.
Я хочу продолжать русский язык.

Or, alternatively, because I'm nuts.

Perhaps the more appropriate illustration is Ilya Repin's painting of the barge haulers:

One needs to see the original in the Russian Museum in Petersburg. A stunning, devastating work depicting the toll of the most grueling, menial labor. Heartbreaking.

OK, so that was a pretentious analogy and utterly unworthy of me. The painting depicts their lives and I am only writing about two hours while sitting comfortably in my home.

It's the week of bad illustrations, after there was a newspaper article whining about the difficulty of living on $500,000 a year in New York City. Excuuuuuse me? You're looking for sympathy?

Realized I still have homework to do before 6:30 p.m. tomorrow evening, using cases I have not yet learned. Oh boy! I know what I will be doing on my lunch hour. Better pack frozen leftovers so I don't waste time walking to Twisters for a burrito.

Oh yes, I am a notorious procrastinator.

Tossed into the deep end

Postings on Nevsky Prospekt, St Petersburg

If you know me at all you know I love languages and learning them. It is play and delight (though also work). I study Russian for fun, if you will, though it is daunting.

Since Russian 2 did not have sufficient enrollment it was suggested we take conversational Russian. This was a bureaucratic, not a pedagogical, suggestion - in other words, please let us keep your registration fee, we don't want to refund it. Fine.

Tonight I went to conversational Russian Half the class are old hands who have been taking this class for at least a couple of years. Two of us had studied only one semester (2 hours a week class), two others knew no Russian and have wisely redirected themselves to Russian 1.

Do you recall when you were learning to swim and not too good at it? You tried always to be able to touch bottom with your toes, just in case. If you drifted too far down the pool you found yourself without that concrete assurance beneath you, just water. You had not yet learned to trust the water, your body, your own buoyancy. You managed to get back to the shallows but not without a frisson of terror.

I think I have just wandered into the deep end of the Russian pool.

There were numerous moments when I had the deer-in-the-headlights look. "You know this," the prof would say while I was thinking, "De ningún manera, Señora, no me recuerdo de eso. What are all these people saying? What was that word? I can't write fast enough! Say what?"

The professor is very good, very patient, and also a good taskmistress. It is evident that I will need to use the resources I have been acquiring over the past year and teach myself grammar. She will explain what I don't understand and drill us, but I must deal with the concepts and the formation of word endings myself.

Thank Godde I know how to do this (as it ain't my first time around the linguistic block).

I did not know a good half of the vocabulary used tonight. There were case endings I have not yet studied. We touched on perfective and imperfective verbs (and I am so glad I had read about those on my own before tonight). My head is swimming. My brain is flailing.

I know I will be OK. I will probably know grammar as well or better than most in the class (because it's what I do, I can't help myself). But it is a challenge.

Onward!

[We all know that "pride goeth before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction." I was feeling really proud of all the studying I've done since my last class at the end of April. Tonight took me down a peg or six. Serves me right.]

Hope springs eternal in the furry beast

The back yard viewed from
my bedroom window
on 17 April 2007.
I had just planted roses and fruit trees.

It is about as bleak now, but much more lush. I will take photos this weekend.

Tonight on the way home I stopped at Costco and Home Depot and bought ten bare root roses. That should brighten up the summer. I obviously am counting on yard time this Saturday (and possibly Sunday).

In other news: I received an e-mail last night from UNM continuing education. Russian II has been canceled because of low enrollment. Sigh. I asked them to transfer my tuition to Conversational Russian and am waiting to hear (a) that they have done so and (b) what room we will meet in this coming Monday.

My regret is that I won't get the continued foundational work before being dumped into conversation. I still have not learned how to form all the cases and we had only touched on past and future tenses. We had not gone anywhere near perfective and imperfective verbs or unidirectional and multidirectional ones.
