Wistful words from "Uncle Walter"

Cf. Glenn Greenwald's article, "Celebrating Cronkite while ignoring what he did."

Ain't that the truth? Imagine what it was like for Cronkite to watch the news. It must have been excruciating.

I like this by Lewis Lapham:

Long ago in the days before journalists became celebrities, their enterprise was reviled and poorly paid, and it was understood by working newspapermen that the presence of more than two people at their funeral could be taken as a sign that they had disgraced the profession.

They surely couldn't find a way to pass on the standards. Nowadays, it's mostly about good hair.

And WHY have none of the tributes to Walter Cronkite shown the footage of the 2008 Democratic Convention where he said something on the lines of "They are thugs down there" regarding Daley's thugs? That is my eternal memory of Cronkite. And it has been expunged from all the memorials.
