O Ever-understanding Lover,
I have grown up in a world
which is addicted to success,
which places halos on those
who achieve fame and fortune.
Free me, I pray, from this addiction.

Guide my hand to lift up to you
all the harvest that may come
from the labor of my hands this day.
Help me to dedicate to you
the results of all I do.

And by offering to you the fruit of my labor,
may the words of your servant, St. Paul,
become a guiding compass for me:
“Whatever you eat,
whatever you drink
whatever you do at all,
do it for the glory of God.”

May I thus fully surrender
the success or failure of my work;
they now belong to you
and to you alone.
May I find my pleasure not in the prize
of my work’s successful completion
or my pain in the shame of its failure,
for my joy is in toiling for your glory.

Fix my heart firmly only upon the work at hand
and not upon the final product,
whether it be victory or defeat.
Let my delight
be only in the task before me,
for to you, my God,
I dedicate the fruits of all my acts.

Reparation

I still feel bad about the time Mimi challenged her readers to figure out what AMDG meant. She had barely clicked on "publish" when I read it and immediately responded, thereby spoiling all the fun of guessing and debating amongst us all. Still sorry, Grandmère.

So, this photo's for Mimi, by way of apology.
It is carved over the doorway of the rectory of Immaculate Heart, the Jesuit parish on Baronne that I have mentioned before. I took a few steps out of my way while returning from lunch so I could grab a few shots of the exterior. (This is the church I mistook for Orthodox when looking at the onion domes on its front towers from a 23rd story window.)

This shot, on the corner of Carondolet and Common, shows a fragment of the rebuilding effort in the Central Business District. I walk by it every day and we passed it in the streetcar yesterday.

Even items that could use repairs have their beauty. Isn't this a lovely base for the device that tells me when I can cross the street?

I am losing track of the photos and can't be bothered to pop over and scroll down to see if I have posted this urban canyon shot yet or not.

Or this fabulous door.

And where did I get my lunch every day while we worked at the former building? (And where did I have lunch today?)
The Tulane hospital cafeteria - a great bargain for quite good food. Granted, when you first walk in to the pavilion where the police keep watch over the lobby, there is a whiff of hospital smell. But you quickly forget it as you navigate toward the food and never notice it again. Fried chicken, spicy rice and beans, cornbread muffins, chicken fried steak, shrimp curry, stuffed peppers, blackened catfish - you never know what the home style offerings of the day might be. Pizza, cheeseburgers or grilled chicken on a bun, do-it-yourself salads sold by weight, wraps, sushi, desserts. Whatever tickles your fancy.

This is looking down Loyola Avenue from Tulane Avenue, an intersection through which I drive six days a week.

And this is the garage where we park. It functions but you can tell it is not fully "restored."
A couple final shots of Immaculate Heart. You gotta love the brick and tile work here.

A little Moorish influence.
And that concludes today's photo tour of New Orleans (or a few small spots where I hang out).

Señor, ten piedad - 6/1/2008

SusanKay sends this request:
Prayers please for Mike D'armour, our local canon nine vicar, who has just been dignosed with inoperable brain cancer and for his wife Bev, co-chair of our Caring Community. Mike founded the Durango, CO community Thanksgiving Diner and has made an impressive journey from from conservative to inclusive. Pray for peace and healing for Mike and Bev and all who love them.
[Emphases in all of these are mine]

Via OCICBW we read these:
From Nina G:

Bishop Laura of JUNIA'S DAUGHTER asks for your prayers for herself and her family. She is in the hospital after an emergency admission. I had not heard from her for some time, and was surprised to get the call. I am pretty much out of the blogsphere and trying hard to make my life work, but I do pray for you all.
and
PRESBYTERIAN GIRL writes on her own blog:

Dear Friends,

I just learned tonight that a dear friend from my days with Covenant Players has been diagnosed with gall bladder cancer. Would you join me in praying for Kathy's strength, stamina and healing?

Thank you.
and
Roseann at GIVEPEACEACHANCE PLEASE, who, as many of you will know, is very poorly at the moment with serious organ failure, wrote this on her blog yesterday:

Tomorrow is our anniversary and I feel sad for my husband. He would be much better off without me.
We can give thanks with Tandaina:
COM
Thank you all for your prayers. I felt carried and supported all weekend. The commission met with me this afternoon and asked some very good questions. I must have responded well enough because they discussed for about five minutes after my interview and then informed me that they are recommending me for Postulancy.

Thank you again, dear friends. Now I go to collapse.
We pray for Leo launching a new blog at Getting There in My Own Time.
(h/t to Padre Mickey for that one)

Would y'all be so good as to hold up our friend Jane R as she labors on her thousands of obligations. As she reported, "I have been working very hard, but things are now easing off."

Jane also asked prayers for her friend Jim "who is co-chair of the Democratic Party Rules Committee!" We all know how stressful that has been in these past few days.

And she adds this:
Prayers and good thoughts are also welcome for my friend Ken (see comments) who just lost his job. Or to put it more exactly, whose corporate employer took his job (and the jobs of a bunch of other people) away from him.
We continue to prayer for MP:
DIARY ENTRY - 29TH. MAY 2008
I have just heard that the position I have been waiting on for the last 6 months has been scuppered by the deanery concerned as they feel it does not warrant a full time priest. In theory this can be overturned by higher authorities but goodness knows how long that would take. I have been sent a list of other jobs that are in the pipeline but all the relevant ones are, at least, 6 months away from interviews as my diocese likes a long inter regnum so they can rent the vicarage out for 6 months and save on salaries (it's the only way we can break even at the moment).

Although I haven't quite lost the will to live, I am losing the will to get out of bed in the morning and that old black dog is a-licking at my heals.
For Bishop Gene at Lambeth (there is a call to help defray the cost of his security there).

For Max and L. (see here and here) and Kirstin.

For the Cunning Runt in his efforts to stay in dialogue with anti-anti-war protesters.

For spell check that doesn't like my old-fashioned way of spelling dialogue. Harrumph.

For those living with car, terrorism, oppression, violence, natural disasters (esp. China and Myanmar at the moment plus the long-term recoveries like New Orleans), drought and famine and floods and the like, plagues and incurable illness.

For the grace to be channels of grace.

Kyrie, eleison.

Maggie and Belle's Grand Adventure

In which the denizens of Desert Farne run amok in the Big Easy

Belle the Hippoposterous: Why does our deck seem like some kind of prison, Mags?

Margaret Macrina Dolphin, aka Maggie: Wrong kind of bars, Belle. Daddy drives downtown every day - just blocks from the French Quarter - and leaves us here to perish of boredom.

Belle: Tell me. I had to spend the first week here by myself during the day. I'm so glad you got to join me or I would have done something desperate. What, I don't know, but hippos have their limits.

Maggie: I was hoping I'd get to join you. It's been too long since I got to go anywhere and I'm not a stay-at-home girl.

Daddy (of camera): Maggie, I'm beginning to worry that you take after your older sister Selena more than I thought. Ever since she ran off with Taylor the Walrus I've hoped the rest of my daughters had better sense.

[Belle and Maggie roll eyes in unison and don't even both to respond to the old man.]

Maggie: Let's blow this pop stand. I'm up for a romp.

Belle: And Grandmère is coming to see us today! I'm so glad she was willing to be our honorary Grandmère.

Maggie: So that's the fountain we listen to day and night.

Belle: We had some rain when I arrived here and for a while I thought it was raining all the time. Silly me, but it does sound like rain.

Belle: Wow, this is fun. Here I used to live about a mile from the streetcar line on St Charles but never got to ride one before. Hooray for Mimi!

Maggie: Hi, Grandmère. You're so pretty. Btw, popster, is that woman behind you licking her lips or sticking out her tongue? Should we be concerned?

Daddy: Now girls, behave. I don't want us thrown of the streetcar before we've even traveled a mile.
Belle: There's Audubon Park. We took a walk there two weeks ago.

Maggie: Just checking, Dad. I wanted to make sure your very first Sazerac was mixed right.

Daddy: And what do you know about Sazeracs, my precocious sea creature?

Maggie: Don't ask. Don't tell. Don't pursue. And can you order one each for Belle and me?

Grandmère: Are these girls old enough to drink?

Daddy: Well, a gentleman does not discuss a lady's age, but yes, they are.

Grandmère in the Palace Cafe on Canal Street, a truly lovely spot for Sunday brunch.

With live music, no less. Bass, guitar, and saxophone/vocals.

Belle: Eat your heart out, Dubya. I'm not afraid to come to Jackson Square in the daytime.

Maggie (off camera): And you didn't start any wars, big sister!

Belle: He is such a [expletive deleted].

Daddy (off camera): Language! Grandmère is here.

Maggie: She doesn't think much of him either.

Belle: Grandmère is such a good sport. She poses for fun pictures.

Maggie: I worry about this one. If the Mad One gets hold of it, anything could happen.

Belle: If he doesn't want a hippo attack, he'd better behave.

Maggie: That's right. We stick up for our grandmothers, honorary or otherwise.

Belle: Solidarity with the Sisterhood!

Daddy, muttering: And I chose to have daughters.

Maggie: Stuff it, Pops. We brighten your life and you know it, even though we have more brothers than sisters.

Daddy: Yes, you do brighten my life. If only you'd behave in public.

Belle (dripping with sarcasm): And you do.

[Audible snickering]

Belle: Well, Maggie, that was fun.

Maggie: I'm so glad the Shriekster and Red Boy suggested we get our own series. Do you think Hollywood is ready for us yet?

Belle: I hear that New Mexico has been making quite a grab for film production. Do we have any connections with Richardson's office?

Maggie: Not yet. Let's work on it.

With a shout out to the Dance Party crew, whom we could never match, and to whom we send fond regards.

Daddy's post script: Bunrab, my girls are lovely but you'd better keep your paws to yourself. Just saying.

A sense of place

I have written a bit lately about a sense of place. Land has form and spirit and presence. One place is not interchangeable with another. Globalization and standardization and horrid lowest common denominators all work against this truth and seek to subvert it. It matters little what Macdonalds or Starbucks you visit, you get pretty much the same product and you have no sense of place. Character and identity are stripped from place and person and we become increasingly unrooted.

Mimi and I shared today our sense of place. She wondered whether she should say anything and if she might give offense but, as the truth came out, desert places just don't work for her. She has been to Santa Fe but hills with no substantial greenery leave her feeling in an alien space. I confessed in turn that I have said I just don't belong in the swamps. As I flew into NOLA at the end of April I looked down at expanses of green algae-covered water and my flesh crawled. I was entering an alien place. Lush greenery is pleasant but I seem to like my water in manageable doses.

Eileen (and her mother) have introduced me to Celtic Thunder, a group of singing Irishmen, and I was surfing several songs from their show on YouTube. I came to this one, sung by their youngest member (with an amazingly strong voice). The sense of place got me all choked up. All Celtic music seems bittersweet and gets to me. [Granted, the first verse in Irish is more silly boasting to impress a woman than love of place.]

Come by the Hills (Buachaill ón Eirne) sung by Damian McGinty

Come By The Hills – Celtic Thunder Ltd

The first verse is done in Irish.
Buachaill ón Eirne mé's bhréagfainn féin cailín deas óg
Né iarfainn bó spré léithe tá mé saibhir go leor 'S liom
Corcaigh a mhéid e , dhá thaobh a ghleanna's Tír Eoghain
'S mur n-athraí mé béasaí 's mé n' t-oibhr ar Chontae
Mhaigh Eo
Here is translation
I am a boy from Ireland and I'd coax a nice young girl, I
wouldn't ask for a dowry with her, I'm rich enough
myself, I own Cork, big as it is both sides of the glen and
Tyrone, And if I don't change my ways I'll be the heir for
County Mayo.

Come by the hills to the land where fancy is free.
And stand where the peaks meet the sky and the loughs
meet the sea,
Where the rivers run clear and the bracken is gold in the sun;
And the cares of tomorrow can wait till this day is done.

Come by the hills to the land where life is a song.
And stand where the birds fill the air with their joy all day long,
Where the trees sway in time and even the wind sings in
tune;
And, the cares of tomorrow can wait till this day is done.

Come by the hills to the land where legend remains.
The stories of old, fill the heart and may yet come again,
Where the past has been lost and the future is still to be
won;
And, the cares of tomorrow can wait till this day is done.

And, the cares of tomorrow can wait till this day is done.

Imagine my surprise

From the Karen DeYoung at the Washington Post:
Previewing the world for the next U.S. president, a top U.S. intelligence official this week predicted that the Bush administration would make little progress before leaving office on top national security priorities including an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, political reconciliation in Iraq and keeping Iran from being able to produce a nuclear weapon.
[Emphasis mine]

Who could imagine that Junior Bush - whose life history is littered with business failures, unexplained gaps, and drug use that he cannot even remember - would prove incompetent or disinclined?

So, whatever happened to prince blogging?

I realize that I have been letting my fans down by not maintaining that regular Friday feature, our end-of-the-work-week steam valve by which we escape political correctness and indulge in silliness around the allegedly noble and occasionally hot men of privilege. Yes, the fan mail has pointed out the absence of this hebdomadal item.

My chum Kathy did her part this Friday by e-mailing me a CNN blurb based on Forbes magazine's list of the top hot royals. Here's the top twenty list:
