I was very moved at the Shabbat service I attended out of town the other night when the head of the synagogue's social concerns committee came up to the bimah (dais/pulpit) to read, very simply, the names of those who had been killed that week.

If I remember correctly, we then said the prayer for the dead (kaddish) for them along with the others for whom we offered the prayer. I may be wrong on the timing of this -- I was tired after a long week and I am now a bit jet-lagged. Either way, it looks like this congregation has made it a custom to read, weekly, the names of the war dead. It was powerful to have this in the worship service (it was toward the end) especially since this was a particularly joyous and celebrative one. Remembering is a duty.

May they rest in peace. And may their numbers diminish, o Lord.
