La temporada de hormigas

I took this photo out on the mesa (near where the broken glass/angel wing lay). It is ant season. Nearly everywhere I walk, whether out in fields or on the sidewalks and parking lots at work, I see them scurrying about. The ground feels alive with them.

I hope they don't ruin any of your picnics today.

They must also be honored because they are not only an immense collective biomass on this planet, they perform important work in aerating the soil and facilitating the web of life.

Which doesn't stop me from making sure they stay away from my house. I let them play in the far end of the garden though.

Fire ants! What are they good for?

I guess the fire ants are good for eating carrion, if they'd just leave the live amongst us alone.

The others can stay in their place, which is not in my house.

My out-house is almost eaten by the bigger kind of Ant here; the Horse Ant...

They say they grow them big in Texas (applied to almost anything). I guess when it comes to ants they grow them bigger in Sweden. Sounds horrific.

I'm all for their working carrion and the soil and leaving the rest alone.

We have big ants in our house. They freak everyone out but me. I don't exactly like them, you know, but I can co-exist. Though the other day when I was sweeping the kitchen, one got caught up in the broom and I felt sorry for its suffering, so I squished it. It was an act of compassion. ;-) Seriously, I have such a hard time killing anything. Silly, I know...

Paul, thank you for stopping by with birthday wishes. It's always a pleasure to hear from you.
