Elizabeth explains it nicely along with a
video. Check it out

The Gratitude Campaign is not about politics. It is about saying 'thank you' to those who fight in a war not on their own soil, of their own making, and often not of their own desire. They want to be home with their families as much as we all want them home and safe and the world to be at peace.
While we work and pray to bring an end to war, let us not forget to say 'thank you'.
Thanksgiving for Heroic Service (BCP page 839):
O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Elizabeth is absolutely correct. In the Vietnam period, we made the mistake of projecting our dislike of the war onto the soldiers, and many of them were drafted and had no choice.
I don't see that happening now, and that's a good thing. Let's put the responsibility on the leadership, where it belongs. Some of the high-ranking generals have been derelict in that they have not done their duty by taking care of the troops who serve under them.
Whenever I see military folks in an airport or elsewhere, I make a point to go over to thank them for serving.
