The Klan comes to my back yard - updated

OK, it's not the Klan, but there are sheets in my back yard tonight. And I think they look ominous.

After two days of fierce winds and off-and-on snow flurries today, we are slated to have a freeze tonight after midnight. I am trying to preserve my fruit. We shall see.

All those items on the ground looking like green olives are actually Santa Rosa plums knocked out of the tree by the winds of the past two days.

And the two shots immediately above are the peaches I am trying to protect. You can easily see there are more than the branches will be able to bear, so after frost and wind I will continue thinning by hand. It is all such a crap shoot. But the reward, when and if it comes.... Ah!

I do hope I can plant this weekend.

UPDATE:

Promoted from the comments because it just made me laugh my ass off:

Passiontide finished weeks ago. Those veils should have been removed before the Easter Day services.

Really! It's not rocket science, you know.

We used to use sprinklers.... and while everything would freeze, the fruit was preserved because of the energy created by the thawing.... or something like that....

But, then again, I suppose it would be hard to use sprinklers in a high wind....

And commercially, we used to prop the branches up with heavy stakes when we got a good set of fruit.... when your trees are a little more mature, you might want to do that....

anyway --I did learn to drive a tractor before I learned to drive a truck... and you got a might fine set of fruit there. I hope and pray the frost/freeze is not bad.

Ah, I have only one sprinkler and I have never used it as I water by hand.

Yes, I have boyhood memories of propped branches. My aunts and uncles were mostly all farmers. I envision them for the day. Of course, with semi-dwarf trees in New Mexico, I have no idea how big these puppies will really get. I plan to keep them compact but look forward to strong branches laden with fruit. Some day!

I can so easily picture you driving a tractor.

Race well, race carefully.
