I was just listening to this on NPR as I poured my coffee and fired up the mac.

Apparently a US Army general- did not catch his name, said this is not an important number. He did add that each soldier's life is precious or something to that effect.

It rings hollow and smacks of the non-sensical rhetoric of this admin and the evil war.

If what he says is true, we should see each casket and know each soldier's name as they come back from the fields of death.

I have this little perpetual calendar that I look at each morning as I sit down to pray and meditate,; I got it from Pax Christi. Today's quotation from Oscar Romero seems to fit this story on Easter Monday... "I don't believe in death without resurrection. They can kill me, but they cannot kill the voice of justice. If they kill me, I will rise again in the Salvadoran people."-Archbishop Oscar Romero

God have mercy on us all. Grant the death the rest and peace of heaven and bring justice to this earth.

The general is right, in a way. The number 4000 is no more important than 3998 or 3999. They're all dead and gone. It's that we must take note. "Attention must be paid!"
