"Nobody is above the law" - updated

"The President and his allies in Congress are playing politics with national security, and that's wrong. Nobody is above the law and telecom companies who engaged in illegal surveillance should be held accountable, not given retroactive immunity. I flatly oppose giving these companies an out for cooperating with Alberto Gonzalez on short-circuiting the FISA courts and the rule of law."
Those are the words of Bill Foster (D) who just won a special election in IL-14, Denny Hastert's old seat. This was a "solidly Republican district," as Kagro X puts it, but Foster won.

Are the Dems in Congress paying attention? The American People do NOT want telcom immunity.

More here.

Christy Hardin Smith has a post up: "The Long Road Ahead For The Civil Liberties Fight And FISA." Good info. Christy shares the items that just came out in the WSJ. If you don't have a subscription, you can read it in her article. Christy observes:
The Gop is fighting to keep full details under wraps because they know this is illegal under FISA. Or at least, keep it muffled until the 2008 elections. Civil liberties sacrificed on the alter of electoral expediency.

She also points us elsewhere:
Raw Story has more ["NSA quietly expands domestic spying program, even as Congress balk"]. As does Glenn.

I don't want Alberto to get an out either. He should be in jail already.

Not that I have strong feelings about it...
