Something to ponder on a patriotic weekend

Of course, I'm rather old-fashioned. Decoration Day is May 30 no matter which Monday people get off work.

Last year I was in a rather tender-hearted state and wept all through Memorial Day weekend. This time around I'm just tired (got to bed at 9:30 last night).

But what I want to share is something in my e-mail this morning from Pepper Marts, a grand firebrand in this diocese.

"One who finds his homeland sweet is still a tender beginner;
the one to whom every soil is as his native land is already strong;
but perfect is the one to whom the entire world is a place of exile."
--Hugh of St. Victor in the Didascalian III, 20

Beloved:

May we keep our eyes ever on the Commonwealth of God and its Justice
-- and never confuse it with anything less.

oooh, I like this. wow.

the "commonwealth of God". I was just talking to a small group about what the words "under God" in the pledge mean to ME (apologies to atheists). That we are not the final judges of ourselves. God is. So we better do justice.

You always find ways to move me.

Paul, I have always felt as though I was in exile, that I should have lived in another place, another time, but perhaps, it is simply the longing for a home that is not of this world, the heavenly kingdom. Sounds absolutely crazy, doesn't it?

Spot on, Diane!

Crazy, Mimi? I rather think you are in the best of company (authors of scripture and mystics) on this one. I believe it is a great grace to be at home wherever you are and always to know there is something greater for which you yearn.

I'm not a nationalist, and I decide that whatever country I'm living in is my country during my stay, but I have no allegiance to any nation. However, when I live in the U.S.A. I tend to feel as if I'm in exile.
